An Insider’s Guide to Admissions in Top Universities

“What after graduation? How to get admission in Top Universities? How to plan for an MS at top universities?”- These are questions every fresh graduate or a Senior Year student faces. Through this blog, I shall try my best to elaborately explain my journey of finding the right university for my Master's program; hence giving you an insider’s guide about all the ups and downs one faces along this process.

How do you know which course to opt for?

To begin with, the whole process - from shortlisting colleges to finally accepting an offer from your dream college - is an extremely strenuous but exciting experience. It all starts with deciding which option to major in.

In my case, this decision was a comparatively easy one because of all the experiences I have had during the first three years of my undergraduate course. Having interned at Cisco Systems as well as the internships I had undertaken at the National University of Singapore in collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprises, my mind was always set on pursuing a course relevant to Wireless Communications and the Internet of Things.

By interning at such esteemed organizations, I was able to get a clearer picture of what I wanted out of my life; possible only because of the guidance I had received from corporate executives as well as esteemed professors.

The opportunities and resources are endless. If you work in a smart and dedicated manner, you can gain as much experience as possible through such internships and courses. The more experience you gain, the more clear your thought process is about what to do next.

How to shortlist universities?

The approach to shortlist the highest-ranked universities should be a very smart and flexible one. The usual norm is to just go by the global ranking of the college and not pay heed to the other, more important factors. One must consider the following factors while shortlisting universities-

1. Ask yourself what you want to do and why you want to do it

The first process of this long journey is to sit down and ask yourself if you really want to pursue a Masters course. Once you have done that, you must chalk out the pros and cons of this whole process and see if it is beneficial to your life goal. Just pursuing a course because everyone else is, is not a strong-enough reason to start your higher education journey, be it in your home country or even abroad.

2. The research outreach of the university -

A university with a high research index/outreach usually has a very well established student learning centre, hence the standard of education delivered will be up to the mark and beneficial for the student’s interest.

3. The acceptance rate-

A university with a low acceptance rate reflects how selective they are with their intake. Only students with high relevance to the course get the opportunity to pursue their studies there. This helps one study with like-minded people and hence the whole learning process turns out to be extremely fruitful. Yes, the competition might be high, but coming out victorious of it is an unmatched feeling.

4. Location and job prospects-

The location of the university plays an important role in the long run. The job prospects increase exponentially if you are graduating from a university located in a similar locality. For example, if you are a computer science graduate in and around California, you have a better chance of getting a relevant job because California is an IT Hub.

5. Cost of education-

The cost of completing your higher education is also an important factor that must be considered. Some universities charge abnormally high fees for a comparatively substandard education. Also, the availability of a scholarship/financial aid helps ease the burden to fund your studies.

6. Competition-

When applying to a university, multiple documents and test scores are required. These are used to classify students and help in the shortlisting process. Hence, to be ahead of everyone in the selection process, it is either better to have a better overall profile or to aim at colleges that are looking for students with similar interests.

Hence, considering all these factors in mind, one must shortlist colleges and then proceed with the applications within the given deadline.

What are the application requirements?

Now that you have shortlisted the universities you wish to apply to, it's time to figure out what are the requirements of each university. While the majority of the universities require more or less the same set of documents and details; a few universities do require you to submit additional documents.

In this section, I shall be focusing mainly on 4 universities, across 4 different countries. I shall be elaborating on their requirements and the admission process to give a clear picture.
